Luck Based Games

Gambling

Gambling is the act of risking something, often money, for the chance of getting something more. Sometimes people gamble or make bets on competitions they are a part of but gambling most often happens on something the people have no control over. People often bet on card games, slot machines, sports, and much more. While gambling is often swayed by probability, it largely revolves around taking a chance out of one's control in hopes of getting a reward.

History

Gambling has been around since ancient times. There is evidence of it in writing and equipment found in tombs and other locations. Gambling was also regulated and severely limited in ancient China, Rome, Egypt, and several religions. It is believed that gambling started when people began to cast marked sticks or other objects to attempt to predict the future and intentions of the gods. From here, people began to bet on the outcome of these throws.

Poker

Poker is a card game played across the world. It is most popular in North America and has been called the national card game of the United States. There are several different variations of poker across the world, but all of these forms share core features. During a poker game the players must call (match) the bet, raise (increase) the bet, or concede (fold). Poker hands are made up of five cards and a hand's value is tied to its statistical improbability. Meaning the more improbable the hand, the higher it ranks.

Players bet on the principal that they have the best hand and then place, match, raise, or concede the bet based on that and the reactions of the other players. Players can also bluff, or pretend they have a good hand, in hopes other players will fold allowing them to win the bet even with a lackluster hand. Poker is almost always played with a standard deck of 52 cards but there are some variations. It is also common to see fake coins, often called poker chips, used as a stand in currency. Sometimes this is used to represent actual currency being bet on the game (as it is easier to break up and keep track of than using bills and coins) or in a more casual setting where no actual currency is being bet and the game is just for fun it is used to keep track of who is winning. While there are strategies for poker such as card counting and knowing when to fold, chance plays a large part in poker.

Luck of the Draw: My Story of the Air War in Europe

by: Frank Murphy, Chole Meelas, and Elizabeth Murphy

Beginning on August 17, 1942, American heavy bomber crews of the Eighth Air Force took off for combat in the hostile skies over occupied Europe. The final price was staggering. 4,300 B-17s and B-24s failed to return; nearly 21,000 men were taken prisoner or interned in a neutral country, and a further 17,650 made the ultimate sacrifice.

Luck of the Draw is more than a war story. It’s the incredible, inspiring story of Frank Murphy, one of the few survivors from the 100th Bombardment Group, who cheated death for months in a German POW camp after being shot out of his B-17 Flying Fortress.

Crashing weddings is so not my thing. I'd much rather stay home and watch HGTV . . . and ignore the fact that my life is messier than those fixer-upper houses. Because my jerk ex left, and the only thing keeping a roof over my sons' heads is my crappy telemarketing job.

But then I get a challenge from the Bad Luck Club, the group I joined to turn my luck around: Do something that breaks the rules. One ill-advised confession to my best friend later, I'm strapping on a pair of heels and crashing the wedding of two of the owners of Buchanan Brewery.

The last thing I expect is to meet someone, let alone the sexy younger bartender who calls me out and finds my lost shoes, something straight out of Cinderella. And the very last thing I expect is to fall for him.

It feels like I'm in a dream come true, a fairy tale, but the crap part about dreams is that they have to end. Or do they?
